Born in November 1984, Ross Taylor made his first-class debut for Central Districts in 2003. The following year, he was selected to play for New Zealand’s Test team in March 2004.

Taylor was then selected in New Zealand’s team for their tour of England. H played two Tests at Lord’s and The Oval, scoring 124 runs at an average of 24.

Taylor played his first One-day international in early 2005 against Australia. He became the third New Zealander to score a century on ODI debut with 120* off 125 balls.

He scored 44, not out in the second final of that series, helping New Zealand win their first Chappell–Hadlee Trophy.

In the first Test of the home series against India, Taylor scored 140 and was named as player of the match. In that same year, he also made his Twenty20 International debut, which resulted in him scoring only one run from two balls faced.
