Paul George – Basketball Career

High School Career

George played basketball at the beginning of the season for the JV team in his sophomore year but was promoted to the varsity team after the season began. He was the only non-senior on the varsity team starting lineup in his junior year.

George began to garner attention in 2007 when he competed in the AAU tournaments. After putting up an incredible performance at the tournaments, his coach handed him leading role in his senior season.

George thus led Knights to the Golden League championship, he was named the Golden League Most Valuable Player, the Antelope Press Player of the Year, and was also a member of the Daily News 2007–2008 All-Area Boys’ basketball team.

George was not considered a major prospect by colleges despite his successes. Rivals.com designated him as a three-star recruit and rated him 20th among a class of California prospects. George committed verbally to the first school that offered him a scholarship, Santa Clara, but later de-committed after high school coach thought that he should keep his options open.

George committed to Pepperdine after a good experience while attending Teiosha’s Midnight Madness event in Pepperdine. He later de-committed midway through his senior year.

He then chose the Fresno State University despite offers from Georgetown and Penn State, because of greater opportunities for playing time.


College Career

George played 2 years at the Fresno State. In his second game, despite losing, George made an impression with his one-handed slam dunk over Mickey McConnell which earned him SportsCenter’s no.1 “Play of the Day for November 18, 2008.

That season, The Fresno State failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. George led the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in minutes played and came second in 3-point shooting, steals and steals per game. George’s 3-point field goal percentage was the third-best in the Fresno State Bulldogs men’s basketball program.

In his sophomore year, George was named the most entertaining player in the west region and rank eighth most entertaining player in college basketball by Sports Illustrated in their “Top 16 most entertaining Players in college basketball” list.  George was named All-WAC Second-Team and rated second in the WAC in free throw percentage, steals and steals per game.

Professional career

Indiana Pacers (2010–2017)

George announced his decision to declare for the 2010 NBA Draft on March 31, 2010, ultimately forgoing his final to years of college eligibility. George was select 10th overall by the Indiana Pacers, making him the highest NBA draft pick in the history of Fresno State. His rookie contract with the Pacers was signed on July 1, 2010. The contract was a two-year guaranteed deal worth $3.9 million, with team options for a third and fourth year.

George made his NBA début against the San Antonio Spurs on October 27, where he played 23 minutes and recording 4 points. He was one of the two rookies from the 2010 NBA Draft to be in the starting lineup for his team in the 2011 playoffs. The Pacers lost in 5 games to the Chicago Bulls in the playoffs. At the end of the season, George was named to the 2011 NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

He was selected to take part in the Slam Dunk Contest and Rising Stars Challenge in the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend in the 2011–2012 season. George started in all 66 games he played in the season. He secured his first NBA player of the week for the first time in his career in the 2012–2013 season. During his campaign he was also selected to take part in the 2013 NBA All-Star Game, that was the first All-Star selection of his career.

At the end of the regular season campaign, George was named the NBA Most Improved Player. In the playoff, he equally had a successful run earning his first career playoff triple-double. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. At the end of his post-season campaign, he was named to the All-NBA Third Team.

In the 2013-2014 season, the Indiana Pacers extended his contract, electing him a designated player which will see him receive 30% of the team’s salary cap. The extension will take effect at the end of his rookie contract in 2014. To secure the 30% extension valued at $90 million for 5 years George had to receive All-NBA honours at any level or be MVP in the season.

He secured an Eastern Conference player of the week honour as a result of his efforts in a victory over the Brooklyn Nets. George helped the Indiana Pacers in starting with a 9–0 record, the first since the Dallas Mavericks in the 2002–2003 season He further went on to secure Eastern Conference Player of the Month honours for the first time in his career, for the month of November.

The Pacers lost to the Miami Heats for the third consecutive time in the Eastern Conference Finals. George secured All-NBA Third team honours qualifying him for the 30% extension, he was also named to the All-Defensive First Team.

During the 2014 offseason, George sustained fracture while training with the US national team set to represent the nation at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He, however, returned to action in the last 6 games of the season for the Pacers.

George was fined $10,000 after criticizing referees after the Pacers 2015–2016 season opener against the Toronto Raptors. He earned Eastern Conference Player of the Month honours for the month of October and November in his season campaign.

He led the Eastern Conference in scoring and ranked fourth in the NBA. George also comped for the Eastern Conference in 2016 NBA All-Star Game where he emerged as the top-scorer. He also helped the Indiana Pacers qualify for the playoffs. At the end of the season, he joined the U.S national team for the 2016 Olympics.

George also had a success with the Pacers in the 2016-2017 season receiving Eastern Conference Player of the Month for April. In July 2017, George was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He replaced injured DeMarcus Cousins on Team LeBron in the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

Oklahoma City Thunder (2018–present)

Weeks before George’s free-agency began precisely on July 1 he stated he would sign with the Thunders which he did on July, 6. He reportedly signed a four-year deal worth $137 million.
