Born on March 6, 1986, Jake Arrieta is one of three children born to his father, Lou Arrieta and mother, Lynda Arrieta.
Jake was born in Missouri, but just 4 months after his birth, his parents relocated to Texas, which was where he was raised.

Jake Arrieta played baseball in high school. After he completed his high school education, Arrieta was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2004 MLB Draft as its 31st round pick.
But Arrieta turned down the offer and decided to attend Weatherford Junior College.

After his first-year at Weatherford Junior College, Arrieta’s performance once again made another MLB team cross his paths. In the 2005 MLB Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers picked Arrieta as its 26th round pick. He turned down the offer again and decided to transfer to another University.
Arrieta transferred to Texas Christian University, and there he played for the University’s baseball team. At TCU, he studied Sports Psychology.
In his second year in college, Arrieta registered 111 strikeouts in 111 innings. As a result, he was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year and was also named to the Second-Team College Baseball All-American.
He also had a good performance during his junior year and was named to the 2007 First-team All-Mountain West. While he was in college, Arrieta who was part of the US Baseball national side, helped his side win the World University Baseball Championship which took place in Cuba.

Baltimore Orioles (2010–2013)
Arrieta entered the 2007 MLB Draft and was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles in the 5th round.
He went on to sign the biggest contract for a fifth-round pick with the Baltimore Orioles which included a signing bonus of $1.1 million.
After his signing in 2007, he went on to play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League. He was key to the Desert Dogs 2007 Arizona Fall League win.
The next season, he played in the Class A-Advanced Carolina League for the Frederick Keys. He had 120 strikeouts in 113 innings before he went on to play in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
In June 2010, in a game vs the New York Yankees, Arrieta debuted for the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB.

Chicago Cubs (2013–2017)
In July 2013, Arrieta was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He was however optioned to play in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League for the Iowa Cubs.
